RainWater Harvesting Project at Tatnuck Magnet 2014 to 2015

Page history last edited by Katie Picchione 9 years, 5 months ago

A NOTE TO ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT - This is our online"WIKI" HomePage where are working on putting together all the information for our partnership between Tatnuck Magnet Elementary School, WPI's Engineering Students, and the WPI Rotaract Club.

This site is not private and is available to anybody online.  If you are part of our group and have a "log in", try to avoid getting too many updates by going to your settings tab at the top and choosing to receive updates daily or weekly, and not every time a change is made.  - Mark

Students from WPI's Engineering programs will collaborate with Tatnuck Magnet School's 6th Graders this school year in an effort to raise awareness about global water issues through previous work on projects such as RainWater Harvesting in Guatemala. Engineering students will share their knowledge and passion for science through a year-long project tied to Tatnuck's newly forming Community Garden and The Engineering Design Process. Projects and presentations are based around the state science frameworks and connects the student's curriculum to projects that make a difference in the lives of our students and others around the world.

Our Mission - To FOSTER an ongoing SYMBIOTIC Collaboration between TMS and WPI students On Local Water-Related and Engineering Projects that Benefit Our Learning Communities and BEYOND!  *** We learn more DEEPLY through TEACHING what we know, or think we know. ***

Timeline September 2014 - June 2015 for the current plan, with hopes for both TMS and WPI Engineering students continue to expand our relationship to help even more communities in the coming school years!

Motivation Theory: http://ozgurzan.com/management/management-theories/theories-about-motivation/

This website gives an excellent overview of various theories of motivation. Consider these when you are making lesson plans and figuring out how to engage both students and teammates. Think critically about WHAT motivates them and HOW they are motivated. At the bottom, there is a link to read more about Management Theory.

Discipline: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/538/is-this-working

This American Life is a radio series aired on NPR stations. The show is about an hour long. The STORIES in this episode discuss classroom management and discipline issues in the classroom.

Restorative Justice: http://www.restorativejustice.org/

This is one of those concepts that we should aspire to teach in everything we do, both inside and outside the classroom. This is the kind of skill you teach by learning. Repeat: teach by learning. As we practice restorative justice and learn how to integrate it into the way we work with other people, we inherently teach by example through the actions of our life. I think this is a skill that all of us should continually strive to embrace.

Schools as Businesses: http://www.teachamantofish.org.uk/

Teach A Man To Fish is Martin Burt’s organization that develops schools as businesses. That is, students’ education pays for itself as students learn entrepreneurial skills and run businesses.

Thank you, Katie. You are so kind. I added Carl and Amy, but need to look for Steve's email. Please play with the wiki format all you'd like. It is easy to use when you get the hang of it, everything saves automatically (after you save it originally by clicking SAVE at the bottom), and don't worry about deleting anything (it is backed up), and IT'S FREE! I have the setting where anyone who writes anything on this wiki (as I am the "owner"), I get an email, so this is an easy way to communicate with me. I believe you can also have a setting that will send you changes / additions to specific pages, you'd get an email as well. That way you don't have to keep checking in to see if there are changes. I'll keep writing as time allows, this week. There are my last 3 days of summer school and I'm planning something big for Wednesday. Saturday is my son's wedding down the Cape, and since I'm officiating (and the DJ... I couldn't let go of control of the music) I'll be a bit busy this week, but getting the grant completed is a priority, so let me know of any deadlines, etc. Other than that, I will continue to write about the details of what we're asking for. We can also add links to sites easily, pictures, embed videos, etc. I'll put a couple in as an example above. I typically don't use the comments section, but this works, too :-)
A couple tips, all you have to do is click the Wiki Tab in the upper left to get to the wiki homepage. This is my school wiki, so it takes you there. I'll put a link in the sidebar to this page just for our benefit. I could keep it without links, but I'm thinking that it doesn't need to be private for any reason.

Mark, this is FANTASTIC!!!! You are an excellent writer. Would you mind inviting Carl Gomes, Amy Mosher, and Steve D'Agostino to this group also? Then they can all see the progress! Also, I personally think your narrative on education is worth sharing. Maybe Steve has some ideas for how to spread the word about this project and your philosophy? I'm just throwing out ideas! I have never effectively used a wiki before, but this looks like an easy to use system. I made a folder for this project (and future projects?) and called it Tatnuck Education Innovations. I might make a few pages just to play around with the system and see what it is capable of. Talk soon! Feel free to give me a call any time--and when Tom calls too! Take care, KP
